This is the fascinating story of two German surface raiders and the havoc they caused amongst Allied shipping in World War II. One was the 8-inch gun cruiser Admiral Hipper, fast, powerful and Navy-manned: the other a converted merchantman, Hansa Line's Kandelfels armed with a few old 5.9s manned largely by reservists, and sailing under the nom de guerre of Pinguin.

  1. Great rivetting read. Poor on basic technical details.
I've been loving reading this account of the raiding voyages of the German auxilliary merchant raider Pinguin & the Kreigsmarine heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper. It includes the stories of their victims, quite harrowing at times. It is a great read, but let down by a failure to proof read & basic technical research. Many RN light cruisers are described as heavy cruisers, compounded by the author failing to either correctly add up & correctly or identify the gun calibers & numbers involved & sometimes portraying a German overwhelming force where the reality was it was at a severe disadvantage. It is well worth reading though, just don't trust the descriptions of ship/fleet capabilities but use sound sources for that.
