The ships were photographed on captain's manoeuvres in the English Channel during January 1984 prior to the squadrons departure to the West Indies.

HMS PLYMOUTH was built at Devonport Dockyard and completed in 1961. HMS LONDONDERRY was built at the Cowes yard of J. Samuel White on the Isle of Wight and completed in 1960. HMS PLYMOUTH was in attendance at the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Fleet Review in 1977 and saw action during the Falklands War in 1982. Paying off in 1988 she was displayed as a visitor attraction in several ports throughout the UK. Lately moored at Birkenhead she was sold for scrap and towed to Turkey for breaking up in 2014.

HMS LONDONDERRY saw service in the West Indies in the 1960’s and also visited Argentina. She was a member of the Atlantic NATO squadron in 1973. In 1975 she underwent conversion at Rosyth dockyard to a trials ship for ASWE at Portland, emerging four years later with her armament removed and fitted with two additional masts. The photograph shows her with one extra mast. She was finally decommissioned at the end of her West Indies trip on 29th March 1984 and became a static training ship attached to HMS SULTAN at Gosport. In June 1989 she was sunk as a target.
