Details

The Survey ship HMS HECLA at Plymouth on 29th July 1982. She is pictured returning from service during the Falklands War where she operated as an hospital ship having been converted for this role at Gibraltar dockyard.

The Queen’s Harbour Master escorts her up the Tamar. For the role she was painted overall white, including mast, funnel and cranes and had prominent red crosses on the hull, funnel and bridge front. Her Wasp helicopter, used to transport casualties between hospital ships and ambulance ships, was also adorned with red crosses in white boxes.

To abide by the Geneva Convention on hospital ships, all classified material and equipment was landed and Marisat, a commercial communications satellite, installed. The White Ensign was lowered and the Union Flag and the Red Cross flag flown at the mainmast.
