Though rated DLGs, and later GMDs, the eight Counties were cruiser-sized warships designed around the Sea Slug surface-to-air missile system. Equipped with Sea Cat as well as Sea Slug, these elegant vessels were the first RN ships of the guided missile age, and introduced many other innovations as well.
Regrettably their service lives were comparatively short, mainly because the beam-riding Sea Slug, which soon became obsolete, made enormous demands on available space. Nevertheless, the ships were popular with their crews. Two of the class served with distinction in the Falklands War, where GLAMORGAN became the first ship to survive an Exocet strike. The book devotes a chapter to each ship, and provides many photographs. Those who served on these fine ships, and all interested in the development of modern warships will relish this book. Over 200 photos. 280 pages
