One of the Churchill class nuclear powered submarines, HMS CONQUEROR is seen on 9th March 1987 leaving 40 Berth in the Port of Southampton after a courtesy visit. British nuclear submarines have been regular visitors to Southampton.

Built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead on the Wirral, she was first commissioned in 1971. She saw service during the Falklands War where she became the only nuclear-powered submarine known to have engaged an enemy ship with torpedoes, sinking the Argentine cruiser GENERAL BELGRANO on 2nd May 1982.

CONQUEROR paid off in 1990 and is currently in long term storage in Devonport dockyard, although her periscopes, captain’s cabin and main control panel from the manoeuvring room are on display in the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport
